Tuesday May 27

On Tuesday morning we packed up our stuff and said our goodbye's to Todd and his dogs and followed my sister, Katie, from Pierre Part to her place in Baton Rouge. She lives in a cute little neighborhood called Spanish Town, which is located just a couple blocks from the Capitol.

We checked out her apartment and then went to this cool little grocery store\restaurant in her neighborhood called Capitol Grocery. It was a really neat old place. We had lunch on the porch until it started pouring rain. That was fine, though, they had a very welcoming setup inside as well. There were a number of regulars that Katie chatted with. Derek couldn't wait to have a "Barry Burger" after Katie talked it up. Barry is the cook at the grocery and makes a damn fine burger. The owner was interested in the drought problems in Georgia and wanted to know what Georgia was doing about it. There was an old piano as well and the boys had fun running through their repertoire of songs.

After lunch we walked a couple blocks to the Louisiana Capitol grounds. There was an old confederate armory there which is now a museum. It had lots of neat things. I especially liked the graffiti that some Union soldiers had carved into the walls. I thought the graffiti gave you a tangible feeling for the history that had taken place there.

We walked around the grounds and then toured the Capitol. It was built by former governor and larger than life character, Huey Long. It's the tallest Capitol in America. We saw the House and Senate chambers and then went to the top to get a great view of the city and beyond.

After the Capitol we walked across the street to the Louisiana State Museum. It was a fantastic museum with some really well done exhibits. We learned all about the different regions and cultures in Louisiana, as well as the history of the area.

We took a driving tour around the LSU campus before heading to see Katie's friend, Hillary, who is a friend of Katie's from college and the contact that smoothed the way for Katie to move to Baton Rouge. She has a great house and neighborhood, which Helen loved and we enjoyed visiting with her and her family.

We had dinner at one of the restaurants that Katie and Hillary frequent before saying our goodbye's to Katie and heading to our hotel room at the Sheraton near Katie's apartment. We were planning on leaving for Texas in the morning and Katie had to return to work, so we would not be seeing her again.
