Derek's 9th Birthday

We had a busy Saturday after the sleepovers on Friday night where nobody got enough sleep. After the parent pickups, Helen took the boys to Adam's baseball game at 10:30. After my tennis match, I arrived just as they were calling the game due to rain. Then we took the boys to buy presents for each other's birthdays and had lunch at ChikFilA, where we saw Jacob, one of Derek's friends from the sleepover. We discussed with Jacob's parents how we all needed a nap. Unfortunately, Derek's 3:00 game was still on. They didn't even get an inning in before it started raining again. We were all wet and tired.

The boys claimed they weren't tired and didn't want to nap, but we insisted. We all ended up taking a 3+ hour nap. Adam came in about 8 and said he was hungry. We had the leftover pizza from the sleepover and stayed up until 1 am watching Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. So much for getting the boys back on a reasonable sleep schedule.

On Sunday, Derek turned 9 years old. Man, that was fast! It seems like he should be 4 or maybe 5, but we blinked and now he's 9! Helen cried when I told her that in another 9 years he'll, more than likely, be on his own.

Derek chose Krystal for his birthday dinner. Adam prefers the chicken sandwiches. He and Helen ate responsibly. Derek and I left somewhat overstuffed.

Derek wanted to wait until after dinner to open his presents - except for one. He opened Adam's present, a Lego Knights Horse & Carriage, before dinner. He told us that he wanted Lego's and a drum set for his birthday, but he was more than happy with our choice of a red Nintendo DS Lite. We also hooked him up with a couple games, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga and Zelda, and nice carrying case. Needless to say, he's really enjoying them.

Helen made a big birthday cookie for Derek to share with his class on Monday.
