Watching the jacks race by in the lobby while we wait for the aquarium to open
Pumpkin decorating contest put on by the different aquarium departments. There were some really creative entries.
It's cool how the colors of the atrium change from time to time keeping the place energized
There are a number of touch pools that help make things more interactive than the usual behind the glass-hands off aquarium experience
Adam touches the soft back of a ray. The sharks were more rubbery. Derek didn't like the feel of them. Adam touched whatever he could reach. It's surprising he didn't end up in the water.
Beluga Whales
Big ray. We were all surprised to learn that these rays were only babies and they can grow to over 15 feet across!
Whale sharks were the stars of the show
Two by two
We were lucky to arrive at feeding time. Marine biologists ride across the water pouring food and the whale sharks follow behind sucking in hundreds of gallons of water and pumping it out their huge gills. Each shark is trained to follow a certain color buoy so they feed one at a time.
The cool acrylic surround tube
Me and my grouper buddy
Nice big viewing area. Kids can sit there for a long time just looking at all the action.
These little worms were cute just wavering in the current
The lighting made taking good pictures tough, but this one turned out alright
Being Halloween there were lots of kids in costumes. This little girl in her peacock costume was precious.
Tropical fish
Inside the penguin tunnel crawl through
These periscopes were neat. You just pop up and you're right in the middle of all the penguins.
Sunday October 31, 2010
It's only been 5 years, but we finally got around to visiting the Georgia Aquarium. We had heard that the least crowded time to visit was on Sunday mornings. It just worked out that the best day for us was Halloween Sunday.
We got there before the aquarium opened and were surprised at how many people were already in line. The aquarium had a festive Halloween feel. There was a pumpkin decorating contest, Halloween decorations all over the place, and lots of costumes. It was fun.
The exhibits were neat. We saw everything in about 3 hours. On one hand it's nice that you can see everything pretty quickly, but on the other hand you kind of wish there was more to it for the price.
Afterwards we went to the Varsity for lunch. It is pretty greasy, but it's good. Adam, the usually light eater, had a hot dog AND a hamburger and of course a frosted orange.
